When we first encounter Mary Magdalene, she is possessed by seven demons. Jesus, upon meeting her, casts the demons out.
Now when [Jesus] was risen early the first [day] of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.-Mark 16:9
We all have our own demons to fight. Sometimes it can feel like they are too powerful to fight on your own. Mary Magdalene’s struggle teaches us that, with the help of Jesus’ love, we can cast these demons out. We don’t have to fight them on our own. In this story, the demons are literal, but in this story Jesus is empowering Christian women to defeat their metaphorical demons with His help.
Your Past Does Not Define You
Biblical scholars do not agree on what exactly happened in Mary Magdalene’s past – what made her soul weak enough for demons to enter. What we do know, however, is that she became the most faithful of Jesus’ disciples after he saved her from her demons. Mary’s past did not matter to Jesus. What mattered is that she sought out his love and forgiveness.
What Mary Magdalene did once she was freed from her demons is the most important piece of her narrative. She fully embraced the teachings of Christ, and so she was chosen to be the first witness to Jesus’ resurrection. No matter what you are going through, if you embrace Christ’s love and follow his teachings, He will help you overcome your struggle.
